Rainbow Grilled Cheese

In this recipe we will be going over how to make both the rainbow bread and the rainbow grilled cheese. Let's get cooking!

Ingredients


(Rainbow Bread)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 tbs granulated sugar
  • 2 tbs salt
  • Food coloring (4+ colors)

(Rainbow Grilled Cheese)

  • 8 slices rainbow bread
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Food coloring (4 colors)
  • 4 tbsp butter

Directions

Rainbow Bread

  1. In a small, microwave safe bowl, whisk milk and egg yolk together and microwave 30 seconds. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, whisk together flour, sugar, and yeast.
  3. Add milk and egg mixture, butter, and salt. Stir to combine.
  4. Using dough hook on your mixer (or by hand on a lightly floured surface,) knead dough until it comes together and has a smooth and elastic texture. This will take about 5 minutes in the mixer, or 10 if kneading by hand.
  5. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces (or however many colors you prefer.) Place each piece in a small bowl and cover with a tea towel.
  6. Remove one piece from a bowl and place on a surface you're willing to cover with food coloring (plastic wrap, cutting board, etc,) and put on some gloves! Add several drops of food coloring and begin kneading the food coloring into the dough, adding more coloring as desired.
  7. Shape dough into a ball and return it to it's bowl.
  8. Repeat with the remaining pieces of dough.
  9. Cover bowls with a tea towel or plastic wrap and let rise until doubled. About 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  10. Once the dough is doubled, punch down and deflate dough. 
  11. Remove dough from bowl and roll out on lightly floured surface into a 8x4 in rectangle. Repeat with each color and layer each rectangle on top of each other.
  12. Roll up dough tightly by the shorter side and form a loaf.
  13. Place loaf in lightly greased 9x5 in loaf pan. Cover with tea towel or plastic wrap and let rise for an hour until doubled.
  14. Heat oven to 375 F. Uncover dough and bake until browned, about 30 minutes.
  15. Remove loaf from pan and cool completely on a cooling rack before slicing.

Rainbow Grilled Cheese

  1. Separate cheese into 4 bowls, one cup per bowl.
  2. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl, mix well, and add more food coloring until desired color is reached.
  3. Heat butter on Steelmade Flat Top on medium heat.
  4. Add sliced bread to Flat Top and toast until golden.
  5. Once the first side of bread is toasted, flip and add cheese. Get creative with the color placement to create your own unique rainbow!
  6. Once cheese is melted, add your top piece of toasted bread to create your sandwich.
  7. Cut and admire your rainbow! Enjoy!
